“A Working Farm since 1619”
Just across the James River from historic Jamestown, Chippokes Plantation is one of the oldest continually farmed plantations in the country. A working farm since 1619, the park offers modern recreational activities and a glimpse of life in a bygone era. Visitors tour the historic area with its antebellum mansion and outbuildings, stroll through formal gardens, and view antique equipment at the Chippokes Farm and Forestry Museum. A campground and four overnight cottages allow visitors to stay on the historic grounds. The park has an Olympic-sized swimming pool and a visitor center with a gift shop. It also provides opportunities to bike, hike, ride horseback and picnic. Chippokes Plantation also offers wedding packages and meeting facilities.

We recently stayed at this park in a 27ft. class C RV. Sites were easy to access and setup. The facilities were clean and well maintained. There is a plantation within the state part, but it's a pretty long walk from the campground. I recommend bikes or driving to access. It has on old mansion built in 1865.
The campground is a 10 minute walk to the river. There are lots of shells and supposedly sharks teeth (though we didn't find any).
The pool wasn't open yet, but it looked nice.
We would definitely stay here again.

Spent the weekend here and enjoyed a peaceful time on the shores of the James River. This state park campground is easily accessible from Richmond (less than an hour). It's on the south shore of the James River which is a very rural area. It's tie to colonial history is the plantation house that's open for touring most days. There is also a farm tools and history museum.
The campground itself is divided up into section A & B. Section A is more wooded and suited for smaller campers and tents. Section B has more asphalt and less wooded. The sites seem to be larger in B.
Since we were only there for a weekend we didn't get to use many of the park amenities but there's a large pool, several playgrounds, visitor center and the James River, which has a lot of beach area.
About 10 minutes drive away there is a car ferry (free) that will transport you across the river to the Jamestown & Williamsburg area. It adds a lot of options to any time you spend at Chippokes SP.
The staff there, especially the interpretive guides, were always helpful and informative. We will definately be back.

Originally , we were going to stay here just a few days, but then Hurricane Matthew came and we stayed put. Dates camped Oct 2-12, 2016.
We had one of the best sites by not having someone directly beside us. It was soooo quiet too. But that could be due to lack of of people due to the weather. There is a free ferry over to Jamestown, Williamsburg, and York. It ran every half hour and about 5 miles away. Good seafood restaurant with views in Surry, Va. Within the park: trails, farm museum and a plantation home you could tour. Ranger led kayaking tours are available. We actually got a private kayak tour with a ranger. Laundry facilities were good. They have a good number of first come sites. Campground hosts are awesome and can answer and even take you around to find a site.
Dings: Not good cell service 1-2 bars between 3g &4g. Maybe a booster would
help. There was a path just behind our site which other campers used. Ended up being ok. Out of state fees were high. Plus if you go to visitors center, they charge a $5 reservation fee. To not pay the fee, get the envelope at the entrance kiosk and pay there.

This Virginia State park had so many things to do:
1) Ranger led programs every day.
2) A beach to swim at (James River)
3) Shark teeth hunting on the beach.
4) Kayaking/Canoeing on the James river.
5) An old plantation that had several tours a day.
6) A farm machinery museum.
7) A swimming pool
8) A small farm and garden you could tour.
It's located very close to Bacon's Castle (oldest brick house in the US still standing) and the free ferry to Jamestown Virginia.
Great showers and laundry facilities, although some of the sites were not very level.

We did not actually spend much time in the park. We basically just slept there as we were exploring the area but we did take a drive around.
The camp host was very friendly and helpful. We were a little confused with having to choose our own site and we needed some help figuring out which loop we needed to be in.
Water pressure was good and electric was goodIsh.

Chippokes is quite, well maintained, with good sized site specific sites. Site specific sites have blacktop pads. If you go without a reservation, the non site specific sites are gravel, heavily wooded, and many are not level. Very close to the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry that drops you at the Jamestown Settlement and Colonial Williamsburg. We’ve stayed in Chippokes twice this year and will likely go back again.

Another VA state park with an incredibly helpful host who gave us great information (we are new to RVing). Clean, quiet facilities. The reserved sites are more modern, and quite popular. We didn't have a reservation so were in the other part of the campground, wooded and less occupied.
There is the farm and plantation within walking distance from the campground, Historic (from 1617), and interesting exhibits. Great wildlife and birding.
It is a bit off the beaten path. Perfect for a more relaxed experience. We took the ferry from Jamestown--fun!

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We walked our dogs down by the water in the mornings. We were able to tour the plantation one afternoon and learn the history of the area. We also took the ferry across the water and visited Colonial Williamsburg. We were also lucky enough to see two bald eagles flying over the farm area. The campsites are not all even, but most were. They have premium sites as well. The price was also great. We will definitely stay here again.

The draw for us was the proximity to Jamestown and Williamsburg. The campground itself is also historic, although CV-19 kind of got in the way of that. There's a car ferry to the otherside of the James River which is kind of the only way to get to the attractions; fun. We had a great dinner The Surey Seafood Co. Facilities were OK, but could use a few more hooks in the shower. Good place to do laundryl $1.00 a load.
