“winning the battle, losing the war”
The Confederate victory at Brices Cross Roads was a significant victory for Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest, but its long term effect on the war proved costly for the Confederates. Brices Cross Roads is an excellent example of winning the battle, but losing the war. Before visiting Brices Cross Roads National Battlefield Site you can obtain a copy of the National Park Service pamphlet at the Natchez Trace Parkway Visitor Center in Tupelo, or the Brice's Crossroads Visitor and Interpretive Center in Baldwyn, Mississippi. When visiting the battlefield site, your attention may be initially drawn to the monument. Near the mounument you can study two signs that provide information about the battle. Beyond the one-acre memorial site though, there are other areas worth exploring to learn more about this significant landscape.
