Natural Wonder

Our Take

Sometimes referred to as “the Niagara of the West,” Idaho’s Shoshone Falls is actually taller than its eastern counterpart. Visit in the spring when the flow it the most intense, thanks to melting snow. In 1974, Evel Knievel tried—and failed—to jump across the Snake River just west of Shoshone Falls. Fans can come within 100 yards of the jump site through a 1.8-mile hike from the falls.

“the niagara of the west”

Located at the edge of Twin Falls, Shoshone Falls is a natural beauty on the Snake River. At 212 feet, the falls are higher than Niagara Falls. The falls offer a unique blend of recreational facilities, including playgrounds, hiking trails, picnic areas, a boat ramp, swimming area, and a scenic overlook. A picnic in the shaded, grassy areas provides a perfect vantage point for viewing Shoshone Falls. Shoshone Falls is among the most spectacular of natural beauties along the Snake River. At 212 feet, the falls are higher than Niagara Falls. They are best viewed during the spring and early summer when water flows are high – depending on winter snow melt. Irrigation diversion of Snake River flows can significantly diminish water over the falls in the summer and fall, particularly during dry years. However, even without high water flows, the views at Shoshone Falls remain spectacular year-round. The City of Twin Falls owns and operates the Shoshone Falls/Dierkes Lake Complex. It offers a unique blend of recreational facilities, including playgrounds and hiking trails, landscaped picnic areas, a boat ramp and swimming area, and a scenic overlook. The complex provides restroom facilities and visitor information, and for a nominal per-car entry fee, visitors can enjoy picnicking and relaxing in the shaded, grassy areas, which provide perfect vantage points for viewing Shoshone Falls.

I saw the falls here and roadtrippers so on our way home from Yellowstone I made a special detour to see it. My husband and I were in awe. It was breath taking. The dam and PGE buildings take away from the beauty a bit and the swag booth is a bit much but it was really beautiful.

Weirdly out of the way through suburbs so almost didn't go. Well worth it, both the lake and the Falls are fabulous. At the lake there is a wonderful family/play/swim picnic area. Only costs $3 for vehicle fee

You must stop here. It's worth the short detour. Driving through the town, you'll never guess that this majestic fall sits just a few miles away from the highway.

* Bring a picnic lunch and sit on the green grass and picnic tables and enjoy a lunch
* Have a $3 frozen banana from the gift shop
* Swoon over the falls
* Take lots of pictures
* Close your eyes and bask in the beauty!

Large park and the Falls are beautiful. Sharp corners made it a bit nerve racking when other vehicles came through. They did have Rv parking on a hill, a large grass area with picnic tables and a lookout over the falls. Definitely worth the stop.

Breathtakingly beautiful falls. My daughter was in such awe she said she never wanted to leave and thinks she's going to move here when she's older. I'm taking that as a "thanks mom- for taking me here."

Stopped by here on my way to Sun Valley Resort. It was beautiful. Such a clean park, nice facilities. The water flow did seem a little low but do not let that deter you! It was still very much worth the little stop. People who did not want to stop actually loved it as well! Thanks for the recommendation!

Stopped here on a whim because of the app and did not expect how beautiful it was! Great place to drive around and see (a little too hot to hike when we were there mid July) but I think hiking would be beautiful too. Great stop! Worth it

Nice place to stop. Well-maintained park, $3 entrance fee, and it gives great historical detail. Almost too much, however. It's a shame how much of the water is diverted from the actual falls. Still, it's worth a visit!

We enjoyed ourselves. The entrance fee is only $3, which I found very reasonable. The park is beautiful and well maintained. We were here in August, so the Snake River wasn't roaring like it would be in the Spring. Still, we'll worth the time and effort.

Stopped by and it was beautiful but was disappointed that the falls were temporarily being redirected due to construction. Sign said work should be completed in Aug 2014
