“learn about the fur trade & military history”

In Fort Vancouver visitors can explore the lands and structures at the center of fur trade and military history in the Pacific Northwest; learn about the diverse cultures who lived and worked here; and enjoy relaxing trails along the Columbia River and Village. They also let one experience costumed programs, hands-on education activities, engaging living history events, creative media and a world-class archaeology collection.

Fort Vancouver National Historic Site is one of the 397 national parks that make up the National Park System and it is located in both Washington and Oregon. This national park is also the heart of the Vancouver National Historic Reserve, which is located in Vancouver, Washington. The Vancouver National Historic Reserve brings together a naitonal park, a premier archaeological site, the region's first military post, an international fur trade emporium, one of the oldest operating airfields, the first national historic site west of the Mississippi River, and a waterfront trail and environmental center on the banks of the Columbia River.

The partners of the Reserve teach visitors about the fur trade, early military life, national history, and pioneers in aviation, all within the context of Vancouver's role in regional and national development. The National Park Service's vast array of public programs -- including living history events, festivals, cultural demonstrations, exhibits, active archaeology, and other special activities -- serve communities in Washington and Oregon and create a dynamic, fun, and unique tourist destination for people of all ages.

We saw the blacksmith demo but there weren't any other demonstrations. Still, the displays at the old fort were interesting.

Great stop with my kids ages 8 and 12. Spent about 1.5 hours including 20 minute video at the visitors center. We love history and enjoyed live black smithing demonstration with 4 giant bellows and two furnaces. Then had a great lunch at Grant's House on Officer's Row.

Visited this site a few times when I lived here. It was a pretty cool place with a good tour and I enjoyed the houses down there, very beautiful. Plus I saw a bunch of men playing bagpipes once and you can't out cool that!
