“come watch the fire breathing dragon!”
The Kaskakia Dragon, located in Vandalia, Illinois just off Veterans Parkway has become a tourist destination, local hot spot, and stop for people from across the country.
This unique, fire-breathing dragon was built to be on the side of the road to attract visitors to put a token in to watch the dragon breath fire.
Since then, it has become a destination for visitors to Vandalia, a GeoCache location for GPS enthusiasts and much more.
Stop by and check out the dragon for yourself today!
You have to get a token from the kaskaskia hardware store just down the road...such a neat little roadside stop =)
its worth the stop and the dollar id say. although i dont think the fire lasted 10 seconds. a picture might b better than a video. and dont follow these directions, they take u about a block away. the dragon is on the corner of 40 and Rock island, as stated above.
Worth the side trip and $1! Dragon is at corner of Veterans Pkwy and Rock Island.
Kid's enjoyed the stop. Probably would have been more impressive if we had gone while the sky was darker, but it was a nice way to spend a few minutes and stretch our legs.
Nice stop! You can get tokens at the liquor store across the street.
MUST SEE QUICK STOP AT NIGHT! Right off the highway, so not a significant detour, and it's so much fun seeing that small burst of fire for $1 per token. Get there before 9pm on weekends, 11pm week days, to get a token from the liquor store. The fire starts the moment the token is dropped into the machine next to the dragon.
This was a fun stop just to stretch my legs. If you go, go at night because you'll actually see the fire.
If you are going through Vandalia, you might want to top for a minute, but don't drive out of your way. It's cute, kids would enjoy it ... but the hardware store where you get the tokens is just that ... no gift shop or snack bar or anything, so don't be expecting a good place to stop. The dragon is cute ... makes a nice picture. Put the token in and fire comes from the front of it for a few seconds.
Right off the interstate it's a neat see! The fire wasn't what I expected but still nice!
Bet it would be better at dusk! Still fun if you need to just get up and walk for a few moments.
