“A beautiful Adobe style home”
Rancho Guajome hacienda depicts a unique example of Anglo-Hispanic architecture built on an original Mexican land grant. Distinguished as a National Historic Landmark for its contribution to the nation's history, the rambling twenty-room adobe ranch house, built with huge profits from the cattle boom of the 1850's, bustled in its heyday with extravagant fiestas, lively rodeos, and constant visitors. Noted author Helen Hunt Jackson stayed at Guajome while she gathered material for her famous novel Ramona. Guajome County Park also offers a rich riparian area, marshes, spring-fed lakes, picnicking, hiking, horseback riding, fishing, and camping.ack riding, fishing, and camping. The adobe is surrounded by wetland open space that is home to a variety of wildlife such as raccoons, ring-necked pheasants, white-tailed kites, least Bell's vireo and the great horned owl. Visitors are welcome to explore the grounds, but must stay on established trails and park roads.Rancho Guajome Adobe hosts special events throughout the year from cars shows to family orientated festivals. Two of the more exciting events are Dia de los Muertos held in October and Rancho Christmas held the weekend after Thanksgiving in November. Since opening to the public in 1996, thousands of visitors have seen the adobe through weekend tours, school tour programs, weddings, and special events like Rancho Christmas and the Quilt Shows. Through its unique history and lasting beauty, the adobe has left a lasting and important impression with many of its visitors of the bygone Rancho days.
