“Cozy, low-key and completely relaxed”

Cozy, low-key and completely relaxed, Le Vatout Bed and Breakfast is a home that we’re fortunate to share with our guests, our friends. A traditional New England farmhouse, it’s our personal artists' retreat and its rooms are filled with paintings, photographs and found objects. Books beckon wherever there’s space. Desks invite the writer in all but one room. But life around here congregates in the kitchen – the hearth is Le Vatout's center, its heart. Outwardly, it’s nothing special, just a big old kitchen last upgraded decades ago, no fancy fixtures, no polished granite, no industrial strength sink --- what matters here is not appearance, what matters at Le Vatout is soul. Meals have substance, flavors have a twist, and old-fashioned conversation reigns as your hosts have a way with herbs and with words and know when to serve either. Whether you crave the quiet pleasure of a cup of tea in the garden, favor a communal breakfast of buckwheat pancakes served at the dining table flooded with sun, or simply want to hang out at the kitchen island, dig into a shrimp omelet and chat, you'll quickly discover that at Le Vatout everything’s just different enough to delight. We've been told that when asked what it meant, this strange little French snippet of a phrase, the founder of Le Vatout would gesture around him, at the fabulous garden, the beautiful house, and reply, "All of it – great food, good company, art and music and nature – everything that matters. Le Vatout means The Whole Thing." He's long moved on and we're honored to continue his legacy of hospitality and appreciation of life in this quiet corner of the world called Waldoboro. Centrally located on the craggy shoreline of Mid-coast Maine, our sleepy little town is just a half an hour north of Boothbay Harbor and a half an hour south of Camden, twenty minutes from Rockland, the Farnsworth Museum and its famed Wyeth and Louise Nevelson collections, and fifteen minutes from Damariscotta, its pretty harbor and its many restaurants. Most importantly, though, we're two seconds away from nature! Pemaquid Point, with its dramatic granite formations and its pretty white lighthouse, is up the road, the quaint fishing village of Friendship up the other, and hiking trails are everywhere. Writers, bring your laptop, artists your camera or your easel, birders your binoculars. Stargazers, there’ll be nothing between you and them. Everybody bring your bikes, your bathing suits, your snowshoes, your kayaks or cross country skis and, most importantly, an open mind for beauty. Your stay here is bound to relax, entertain and enrich you. At the end of your visit we're sure you'll agree, Le Vatout really does mean The Whole Thing!
