“Forrest Gump's school!”
In 2006, the Colleton County Courthouse began an extensive renovation project and created a temporary facility at Hampton Street School, investing over $1,000,000 in the building's infrastructure and some interior spaces. All of these improvements have remained since the Courthouse reopened in 2007. The Colleton County School District has contributed to the success of the project by conveying the building at an affordable cost. Additionaly, the City, the Arts Council and the County have each contributed $10,000 in seed money toward the project. The Center offers a gallery for rental uses including art exhibits, performances, receptions and meetings. The Gallery is also equipped to serve the business community for regional meetings, conferences, and employee training seminars. The Colleton County Arts Council uses the space to enhance their educational programs, to educate school children and adults on the importance of Colleton County's history and many assets. Our 500 seat auditorium (known historically as the Hampton Street Auditorium) is a beautiful example of a performing arts venue, which continues to host national, and local performing artists.
