“discover the nation's zoo”

Part of the Smithsonian Institution, the National Zoo is the nation's zoo. It is a 163-acre zoological park set amid Rock Creek National Park in the heart of Washington, D.C.

You can visit the Zoo 364 days a year to see 2,000 individual animals of 400 different species.

The National Zoo is a beautiful urban park offering family fun and excitement, stimulating education programs, and a peaceful place to enjoy nature. There is something new to discover on every visit.

The Zoo is one of Washington's and the Smithsonian's most popular tourist destinations. We welcome up to two million visitors—from the local community, the country, and the rest of the world—every year, free of charge.

We are a place where people can marvel at wonderful animals, learn about wildlife and its conservation, and enjoy a beautiful, peaceful experience among our gardens. We are a member of the American Public Gardens Association. We are also a research, conservation, and education center for endangered species. And, we boast a state-of-the-art veterinary hospital and extensive research facilities.

My favorite thing here is the panda exhibit. Not a lot of zoos have pandas, and they're truly adorable!

Pretty incredible zoo, I think it's one of the best as well as oldest zoos in the country. It's also free!

I really like this zoo but there are a lot of hills inside the zoo if you're going to be pushing a stroller. During the summer it's going to be very crowded and a lot of the animas are just too hot to do anything but sleep. If you drive to the zoo they charge $22 for parking. You can take the metro and walk less than .5 miles and save yourself the hassle and money.

make sure you wear comfortable shoes you will walk a ton, try to spend more than one day, there is so much to see and do. I really liked the layout and habitats, most the animals werrre easy to see for both adults and small children. I really enjoyed my visit and will go back next time im in dc :)

Nice zoo but honestly, not significantly better than other large city zoos (I prefer San Diego). The science on much of the written materials is unsupported, such as "you can help the endangered such and such by buying organic food! " um, noo.

So, what do you need to get three elephants, weighing a total of 22,500 pounds, across 2,400 miles on a 60-hour road trip? Well, 130 gallons of water, 24 bales of hay, 200 pounds of grain, a case of cantaloupes, a case of watermelons, and 10 bags of wood shavings.

Lovely day out. It's free and open nearly every day of the year. As well as all of the animals they also have a carousel. Definitely recommend going

Lovely place to spend the day and it is FREE! Parking is $22. I highly recommend joining FONZ Premier $80. It makes parking free, discounts on almost everything and discounts at other zoos/aquariums, plus you just saved at least that much, by getting in free - help feed the animals. I know what a tight budget is, so I'm getting off the soapbox. Some animals are hard to see (Impossible), you get quite a workout- uphill walk both ways, or at least feels like it. I gave it a 4 because many exhibits were closed. I thought Philadelphia Zoo had many more animals but National Zoo was cleaner and more beautiful and lots of shade. Also areas for children to play in the water-a huge plus on a hot day.
