Our Take
Inscriptions on walls and the monument itself reference King’s words, which are still as relevant as vital today as they were when he first spoke them decades ago. The memorial, dedicated in 2011, is the first on the National Mall to honor an African American and only the fourth to honor a non-president. The powerful visual of a finely-sculpted King emerging from a rough-hewn pillar of stone echoes King’s words: “With this faith, we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope.”
