“on the lake's beautiful shores”

Come join us for a beautiful lunch or dinner on the shores of Lake Ontario. Fine dining, spirits, and entertainment.  family business got its start in 1928 when Helen and Charles Nowrocki opened a restaurant on Norton Street. This was the beginning of what has become more than 80 years and 5 generations of restaurateurs. The name Hedges evolved from the majestic row of hedges that was adjacent to the restaurant. During the era of prohibition, the hedges also served as a way for Helen and Charles to discreetly serve their customers. People would call to “place their orders” and the alcohol would be placed in the hedges for a later pick up. In 1949 the restaurant moved to a new location on the corner of Joseph and Leo Avenues, but retained the name Hedges. With the opening of this location, Hedges became a family business, as sons Victor and Stanley worked alongside their parents. In true family tradition, Helen and Charles, along with their sons and their children, all lived together above the restaurant for many years.  As the family grew, so did Hedges, serving the neighborhood customer and local ballpark enthusiasts with a family approach. Before long, both sons ventured out on their own. Victor and his wife Thelma opened the Colonial, located on Empire Boulevard at the end of Irondequoit Bay. Stan and his wife Olga moved to Webster to open what would become Hedges Nine Mile Point.  At the turn of the century, the site on Nine Mile Point consisted of a small restaurant and hotel built by early Webster pioneers Hiram and May Wright. The hotel consisted of 12 rooms, and the restaurant featured a dining room, bar, and a large porch that was ideal for summer dining. Commercial fishing was important in the area from “the Point” to the mouth of Irondequoit Bay. Nets were used to catch great quantities of whitefish, salmon, and sturgeon. Since the channel to Four Mile Creek was deep, fishing boats anchored there easily. Stan and Olga purchased the old hotel from the Wrights in 1954, and began the task of renovating and upgrading the property. Following Stan’s death in 1966, Olga, along with daughter Judith and son-in-law Barry Swift, continued to expand the business and develop the property. Barry and Judy’s vision of a premier restaurant located on a magnificent site on the shore of Lake Ontario has been realized and enjoyed by discriminating diners for over 50 years. The dining experience is enhanced by the beautiful, well manicured lawns, gardens, patios, and gazebo. In time, Barry and Judy’s sons and grandchildren joined the business too and worked alongside them. Today, Thad, Sharon and their daughters, along with Jason Swift are proud to carry on the legacy of five generations of the Nowrocki-Swift family, offering you exceptional service and excellent cuisine.
