Whitey's Jolly Kone

"Situated just off Business 1-80 in West Sacramento, Whitey’s Jolly Kone looks like it has changed little since it opened in 1962. It probably hasn’t, which is good news for those craving very cheap burgers and shakes.  Whitey’s offers a menu of burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, deep-fried appetizers, Mexican food (including a deep-fried burrito that we did not try), shakes and ice cream. Most items are priced at $3 or less, so a feast for two only averages about $10.  The Deluxe Burger with cheese and bacon – loaded with crisp bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and pickles – tasted great despite the dry roll that fell apart. The King Grilled Onion and Pepper Burger also tasted great while imparting a slight sweetness from the grilled peppers and onions. The crispy and hot French fries, fresh from the fryer, are also a must. Though not house-made, they pair nicely with the burgers and provide a salty balance to the milkshakes. The milkshakes appear to be made using soft serve ice cream, and are flavorful and very thick. We were told that during the summer months, Whitey’s also offers peach shakes made with fresh peaches blended in with the ice cream. What a way to cool off in the summer heat!  Other items were less noteworthy. The chicken fried steak sandwich and the chicken sandwich are both made with bland frozen patties, and while they taste OK we suggest sticking with the burgers. The fried zucchini sticks also tasted of the frozen variety and were no match for the fries.
