“the former world's greatest sea weapon!”

After serving as in WWII and as a training vessel for midshipmen, NORTH CAROLINA was decommissioned 27 June 1947 and placed in the Inactive Reserve Fleet in Bayonne, New Jersey, for the next 14 years.  In 1958 the announcement of her impending scrapping led to a statewide campaign by citizens of North Carolina to save the ship from the scrappers torches and bring her back to her home state. The Save Our Ship (SOS) campaign was successful and the Battleship arrived in her current berth on 2 October 1961.  She was dedicated on 29 April 1962 as the State's memorial to its World War II veterans and the 10,000 North Carolinians who died during the war.

You simply can't go wrong visiting the battleship, especially for kids 2 and up. Seeing how they lived on ship (where they ate, where the showered, where they slept, how tight the stairs are and how big the ship was) is very captivating. I suggest you plan for a couple hours, go on the weekday in the fall in the morning (not too hot or crowded). You can even spot alligators if you're lucky so look to the water often!

I enjoyed walking through the different levels on the ship. I suggest going in the morning or when it is cool out because it can get hot inside the ship.

It was so much fun!! Very interesting to see how you can walk right through history. Just to imagine those very same hallways and items were touched by solders so many years ago.

Very cool stop. We went here for a few hours before a family wedding with the kids ranging from 5 to 14 years. There was something to keep everyone interested and the details on the signage were very interesting for history buffs. It was amazing to see how people lived and how the mechanics of the ship worked. A great piece of history and a reminder of what our navy experienced in WWII.
