“Hottest, oldest, and most dynamic of Yellowstone's thermal areas”
There are very few thermal features at Norris under the boiling point (199°F at this elevation). Norris shows evidence of having had thermal features for at least 115,000 years. The features in the basin change daily, with frequent disturbances from seismic activity and water fluctuation
We think Norris Geyser Basin is somewhat underrated. It is a large geyser basin with a TON of thermal features to explore, and is also home to Steamboat Springs. If you're lucky enough to see it erupt, it is the tallest active geyser in the world! Tip: When we arrived, we noticed a lot of cars with tarps or covers over them. We found out this is because if Steamboat erupts, the water from the geyser can cause damage to paint and glass on your vehicle, so consider bringing a cover in this area.
This was a huge basin with so much to see. Guysers and bubbling everywhere. It was more impressive than old faithful to be honest.
Simply amazing. Well worth the stop and easy and more challenging walks.
Finally a location we could find at Yellowstone where the RV parking wasn’t already full of cars (actually we parked in bus parking). Nice easy walk with several geysers and colorful sulfur holes.
