“Outlandish advert, iconic attraction!”
The Shoe House, built in 1948, was by far "Colonel" Mahlon N. Haines' most outlandish advertising gimmick. It is a wood frame structure covered with wire lath and coated with a cement stucco. It measures 48 ft. in length, 17 ft. in width at the widest part and 25 ft. in height. The interior consists of five different levels and contains three bedrooms, two baths, a kitchen and living room.
This giant structural advertisement was originally used as a guest house. In the first year after its completion, elderly couples were invited to stay for a weekend and live like "kings and queens" at Haines' expense.
The Haines Shoe House went under new ownership in 2015. We offer guided tours, Beck's Ice Cream and treats from Mellie's Makery. Bus groups welcome, please call ahead. No appointment needed for daily tours.
Open first day of Spring through October First day of Spring - Memorial Day: Fri, Sat, Sun 11-5 Memorial Day - Labor Day: Wed - Sat 11-7, Sun 11-5 Labor Day - Halloween: Fri, Sat, Sun 11-5 *CLOSED EASTER SUNDAY*
Wasn't opened when I was there, but totally weird and worth the stop!
The Haines Shoe House is awesome!!! One of the best pieces left of the old Lincoln Highway Roadside America! Come check it out if you haven't before...and go back to see the new changes along with the new owners if you visited before! Serving local Beck's Ice Cream and Mellie's Makery Treats! Closed Mon & Tues, Wed-Sat 11-7, Sun 11-5. Open First day of Spring to Mid-November. A must see!!!
I would definitely take the short detour off the highway to take a very personalized tour of this extremely quirky gem. It's been privately owned for it's entire existence (nearly 70 years) and the couple that owns it currently has been giving tours in the spring/summer/early fall for the last 12 years. They also restored the ice cream parlor in the basement which historically has been a big hit! No photos inside, but they'll take you all around their private residence. A true folk-art phenomena with the story to match.
Arrived too early to tour, but very cool to pull over and gawk at! Lots of detail, a wonderful curiosity and a great example of disappearing Americana.
August 2014. Only open Wednesday-Sunday from 11am -4pm.
kinda neat if you are in the area - easy access off the interstate - quick photo op
Took the kids before we left York for California...they also allow honeymoons...it is a cool structure....the kids got a kick out of it...Hellam also has some interesting little shops...it's a pleasant burg!!
2013: I believe it is currently only open at weekends, or if booked in advance for a group tour.
Wasn't open when we got there. It was cute but it is closed Mondays and Tuesdays!
This is such a fun little place! We stopped over while passing through the area and it was definitely worth it. There's an ice cream shop and a fun tour of the shoe house which was a former honeymoon spot in the 50's. Ice cream plus tour is about an hours worth of time. There are also picnic tables outside if you want to bring lunch.
