Church of The Good Shepherd

Designed to give the impression of quiet strength and simplicity, The Church Of The Good Shepherd embodies the essential qualities of the early settlers who endured the tough Mackenzie Country environment: modest, hardy, strong, loyal. Today, the setting of this majestic spot entices visitors from all over the world.

Opened in 1935 the Church of the Good Shepherd is the sole church in Lake Tekapo and continues to be a place of worship for local residents holding Sunday services (as well as weddings, funerals and baptisms). It was designed by Christchurch architect R.S.D. Harman, based on sketches by a local artist, Esther Hope. There is usually a guide present during these hours: 9 am - 5 pm during summer, and 10 am - 4pm in winter.
