Many lovely walking tracks are nearby, starting within the village. Enjoy the Taranaki waterfall, Whakapapa river, mountain views and stunning volcanic features of the land. The world-famous Tongariro Crossing 1 day hike is just a short shuttle ride away. Whakapapa ski field is just 6 kms up the road, with a gondola ride to New Zealand’s highest cafe and amazing views. Don’t forget the great skiing in winter. For the more adventurous, there is also the mountain biking, river rafting, trout fishing, canoeing and other outdoor activities. We are in the heart of the Tongariro National Park, designated a dual World Heritage area for its Maori cultural and spiritual associations as well as the outstanding physical features of this volcanic landscape.
