Loved the extra knowledge and appreciation for these settlers that I got after seeing the ships and fort in person. Reading about the voyage is one thing, walking around on the ships another... There were knowledgeable folks posted in all outdoor areas to answer questions and interact with, they were all kind and seemed genuinely interested in sharing information with us. Got to try on armor and see a musket firing demo. Loved some of the maps in the museum... especially the one that allowed me to filter the battles by year and who was involved - good use of technology to keep things interesting including a couple of movies and some spoken stories. We spent ~ 6hrs here including a lunch break. The cafeteria was good.. nice selection and fast service. We visited during the week in mid September, there were no crowds.
Brought a 4, 6, and 7 year old to visit this historic spot. Last time we visited was years ago and I appreciate the amount of work that has been put into it. The staff were knowledgeable and engaged with the kids. My 7 year old always asks questions and he was answered very politely. Only one ship was available at our visit and the kids thoroughly enjoyed exploring it. The building is currently having work done to improve the experience. Perfect day to see it as it was 70 in February, so lucky us! Didn't get a chance to explore all the exhibits inside and there is a "no photographs" sign entering into them. Abnormal day will take you probably about 2-4 hours to see everything if you have kids that are interested in learning. Many props available to explore as well. There isn't a military discount unless you pay for season passes. Not too pricey for what they have there. Enjoy your visit.
Not very impressed. I was happy to see all the hands on items and we enjoyed the flags in the parking lot and the movies in the theater. However two of the ships were closed during our visit and not one costumed staff member talked to my children about any of the history and that was our whole point in going. The staff were too busy telling the senior citizens about the history instead. I almost felt like my three kids ages 12, 5, and 3 were completely ignored by all of the staff. This is not a place I would be in a rush to return to. I brought my kids here for a homeschooling experience and made that know to the front desk staff and was ignored by every staff member I ran into after that.
I have a 12,8, and 6 year old and they absolutely loved it!! Great photo opportunities! We ran out of time!! We were there 4 hours!!
