“Your Home for Shopping from the Sea”
Forget about the Lumberjack Muffler Man, the World's Largest Ball of Twine, or The Mystery Spot, because the weirdest roadside tourist attraction might just reside in Michigan. What kind of strange artifact could possible top some of the most famous roadise wonders of all time? Easy. A massive, man-eating clam. Sea Shell City has been a staple of Cheboygan, Michigan since it opened in 1957, serving as a bizarre little nautical-themed gift shop in a place that's a lot closer to Jersey Shore than the Bahamas. In fact, none of sea-shells, of which the shop sells thousands, are even from America. While it might seem like a head scratcher that such a weird shop would be located in the Midwest, much less thrive there, Sea Shell City is one of the oldest and most beloved roadside attractions in the area, but a lot of that has to do with its prized possession: the man-killing clam. Giant billboards have proclaimed the killer clam's presence for decades, bringing in curious travelers eager to see the 500 lb beast. The huge clam sits on a sturdy table just beside the men's restroom, covered in fake seaweed. Of course, the owner of the Man Killing Giant Clam is sure to point out that it's never eaten men, just killed them by locking down on unlucky swimmers' feet, holding them at the bottom of the water until they drown. At least, that's what the Filipinos who sold it to her said. The killer clam is long-dead, but if you see the billboards and decide to swing by and check it out for yourself, you might want to keep your hands clear of the beast's jaws... just in case. -Roadtrippers Sprawling gift shop with rubber tomahawks, raccoon caps, and nautical novelties. And don't forget to see the "man-eating clam".
If you love kitschy, old-fashioned souvenir stores then this is the place for you.
