“try the 72 oz steak challenge!”

We are located on I-40 East just outside of Amarillo. Join us for our 72oz. steak challenge. Eat it in under an hour and it's FREE! (If you can keep it down)

Ride to the Big Texan in Grand style! Our “Cowboy Cadillacs” run the I-40 and I-27 corridors in Amarillo. We regularly pick up guests from motel properties, RV parks and truck stops. Local residents can make arrangements for us to pick them up at Cavender’s Boot City. Not to worry, we take everyone back when their bellies are full and their hearts are light.

R. J. “Bob” Lee, a Midwesterner, whose family roots went back to the four-star Savoy Grill in Kansas City, grew up on stories and movies about cowboys, Indians, horses and Texas cattle ranches. The Texas mystique drew him like a lodestone. When he made his way to the Texas Panhandle and to Amarillo with his wife Mary Ann and their growing family, it didn’t take long for him to embrace the Lone Star State and to claim its persona as his own.

His only disappointment was that he couldn’t find a first-class Texas-style steakhouse in an area of the country best known for cowboys and cattle. In true Texas spirit, Bob decided to create a place that would satisfy the world’s hunger for good steaks and the ambiance of the Old West. He had no idea in those early days that he was destined to become a part of the Texas legends and lore that he loved.

This place is so much fun! My steak was good, but my husband's was delicious (go for the rib eye!). We happened in when someone was just starting the 72 ounce steak challenge which was incredible. Everyone cheered him on and I seriously felt like I was in the movie Great Outdoors :) Great ambiance, good food, and a crazy shooting gallery up front. Oh and if you like blue cheese dressing, be sure to try it here...so amazing!

It all started when the founder offered up a contest... Who could eat the most 1lb steaks in an hour? When the dust settled one man had downed 72oz of steak plus sides and a legend was born. Today, the place still offers the 72oz steak challenge and if you finish your meal is free (plus you get on the wall of fame). If you're traveling Route 66 across Texas you MUST eat here. There's no better restaurant that sums up the spirit of Texas.

As the sun went down we called it a night and decided to stay at the Big Texan Motel. Easy on and off I-40. The staff was very friendly and kind. The room was very clean and had all the amenities for an overnight stay. The pool was in the shape of Texas and that really surprised us! For anybody looking for a place to eat there is a great steak ranch right next door. Breakfast was also very nice. Overall we had a great stay for a great price, I would surely stay here again if given the chance.

We stayed here for one night on our roadtrip from Texas to Cali. There's not much to do in Amarillo so the Big Texan was one of the things that made us want to visit. It's something you would expect from an old Route 66 motel. It's kitschy and eclectic and has a lot going on. The beds were uncomfortable, the pool was MUCH smaller than the pictures, and the food was alright. All three girls in our room woke up in the middle of the night, hearing noises and sensing there were ghosts or spirits. It added something to the experience to think that maybe we had some ol' western cowboy ghosts visiting us!

This a cool experience. The homemade brew was delicious. The food was decent. I've had much better prime rib. The staff was polite.

Absolutely perfect mix of good ol' Texan cheese and Wild West decor for my 4 boys ages 11-2. My 6 year old was completely in awe of the elk heads one of which is said to be the largest ever caught! Our family had so much fun eating here and we all shot some rounds in the shooting range afterwards. There is a cute gift shop with Texas theme deco etc .
The absolute best was the free "longhorn limo ride" to and from our hotel! You can't get more Texan than that. Kids meals were fair prices and they came with a nice souvenir cup (the older boys loved ) and a cowboy hat which totally made their day! Come on mamas, wouldn't you say that's an amazing deal! We loved the steak and if you are a beer drinker, you must try the sample tray of their top beers 10 for $12. They have their own micro brewery with quite a good selection! And with the free longhorn limo ride back to our hotel we didn't mind a few! All the staff was very friendly and the limo driver even gave us a good history chat of the town and restaurant! A fun family stop and a definitive place to visit in Amarillo. We can't wait to visit again.

Not a bad place for a steak.
Looks great, very cowboy. Someone did the 72oz challenge in 27mins while we were there. Decent steak, great waiters, home beer.
