“Home of sweeties jumbo chocolate!”

In the early 1900’s, Grandpa Yarman sold his only possession, a portable RCA radio, for his first wheel of Ohio Swiss, and started his own cheese house, “Yarman’s” in West Salem, Ohio. Soon he started to smoke his own country hams and bacon and enlarged his store. His unique way of smoking meats and his reputation for quality spread throughout Ohio. In the thirties, Grandpa Yarman became a source for high quality meat and cheese, at a fair price. It was during this time that Grandpa Yarman took sick. His store, with no one to help smoke the meet or to get the cheese, fell on hard times. His daughter, Vera, now Grandma, met Grandpa and the two of them started to reconstruct what Grandma’s father had built. Grandpa Baum followed the same trials to the best cheese makers in Ohio and explored new areas in Ohio to obtain the best Colby, Baby Swiss, and many other types of Ohio cheeses. Grandpa Baum began adding gourmet foods and homemade candies, always aware of keeping the family religion of quality. As the years went on, the quality as well as the business grew, under the watchful eye of the new Grandpa and Grandma. The Baums enjoyed a most profitable life in business as well as being community-minded people. At the present time, their daughter and son-in-law carry on the family tradition, started by Grandpa Yarman. The tradition of quality in home smoked meats, superior Ohio cheeses, the best available candies and ice cream can be found at what is now known as Grandpa’s Cheesebarn and Village, located at I-71 & 250 in Ashland, Ohio.

This place rocks my world. Definitely stop here. Try all the cheese. The ice cream is just okay, but they let you do the toppings yourself which is a huge plus.

Grandpa's has a large selection of cheese. You can sample and buy almost any cheese on the second floor. If you're there for lunch, the deli makes some delicious sandwiches and there's a chocolate/candy shop next door for dessert!

"Pull over." I demanded from my (at the time) boyfriend. He looked confused, and said no. "I see a sign for Grandpa's Cheesebarn," I explained patiently, "Pull over." He again refused, as we were already late. I grabbed the wheel and jerked the car off the exit towards that heavenly sign.

One near death experience and short breakup later, I was at *Grandpa's Cheesebarn*. I don't like to exaggerate, but it's safe to say that Grandpa's Cheesebarn is a little slice of Havarti Heaven on Earth. They sell local cheese, smoked cheese, cheese curds, Amish milk cheese - the cheese of your wildest imagination. This place gets packed with randos, but I'm perfectly comfortable throwing a few elbows to get to my cheese. They have a ton of free samples, but I ended up maxing out my credit card making sure I didn't miss anything. It was worth it.

Grandpa Yarman is Willy Wonka, and this place is the Chocolate Factory of cheese.

DO NOT ORDER FROM THIS PLACE. GRANDPA'S should operate as a walk-in business ONLY. I placed an order for a gift basket for a family that had lost a loved one. After 5 days and no sign of the package, I contacted Grandpa's Cheesebarn. They had not even shipped the package and told me that it would cost me over $40 to insure it got there in two additional days - that's $40 to get the package to the recipient 7 DAYS AFTER placing the order. They sure didn't take 7 days to charge my credit card - it was charged within a couple hours of my placing the order. When asked why my credit card was charged five days ago and the order not shipped, I was told I would have to speak to the owner, who was in meetings all day. Wow! So the grieving family does not get our package while family is all in town and I am left with going to another retailer. Wish I had gone with Bieris in Wisconsin - they were helpful and got my order shipped the day I placed it.

GRANPA'S CHEESEBARN is a huge disappointment and do not care!!!!

This is the best place to stop if you're driving up or down 71. It's right off the highway and it's the perfect place to get out of the car and walk around. They have lots of cheese to sample and buy, little trinkets you can browse and you can get popcorn or other good road trip snacks.
