“Atlanta's home to the blues”
As you sit in the Northside Tavern most of the time you are there you mouth will hang open in disbelief. This bar is a cross between Harpo’s Juke Joint in The Color Purple and the Mos Eisley Cantina in Star Wars. At any point you are expecting Rod Serling to walk out and do an monologue. If you can get past the circus-like atmosphere of the Northside Tavern, you have found a great watering hole. The bar has cheap drinks and great music. It is the host to some of the best local and regional Blues and Jazz acts. The Northside Tavern was built in the 1940's as a neighborhood grocery store/gas station and it evolved over the years into a neighborhood blue collar bar called Northside Package. A fixture of the area and a stopping place of refreshment for many years, this lively musical gathering spot has been under continuous ownership by the same family since 1972. The area immediately surrounding the Northside Tavern historically was the Miller Union Stock Yards. From the early 1900's to around the 30's and 40's the buildings were mostly wood barns and pens for cattle, horses, mules and other livestock. Many of these structures burned in a 1940s fire according to Howell Station resident Jules Carter. A young musician named Danny "Mudcat" Dudeck approached the owner with a new plan in 1992 and rewrote Northside Tavern and the Atlanta music scene history. Danny and Ellyn brought the Blues and Blues Musicians to the club. Danny is responsible for introducing the younger generation Blues musicians to the older generation, he showed the new generation where our roots lay and and forever changed the Atlanta Music Scene. Danny began the "Give It Back" series of concerts that began the Northside Wall of Fame tradition.
Kind of a smiley bar, but if that doesn't bother you the music is wonderful and the atmosphere is come as you are. No cover Monday-Thursday. Monday is open mic, Wednesday is the Mudcats and my personal favorite The Breeze Kings play every Thursday night. One of the best dive bars in Atlanta.
Pool, live blues, dancing, super old-school vibes, a little dirty and grungy, but in an authentic way, not a slimy way.
