“Three caves, over 100 pictographs!”

The Pictograph, Middle and Ghost caves were home to generations of prehistoric hunters. A loop trail allows visitors to view the rock paintings, known as pictographs, that are still visible in Pictograph Cave. Start your visit at the new visitor center. Pictograph Cave State Park is a place to contemplate the origins of human habitation in Montana. The Pictograph Cave site was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1964, because of its archeological significance. Today's visitors can enjoy a unique opportunity to explore the mystery of this extraordinary site and tour the new visitor center. Prehistoric hunters who camped in Pictograph Cave left behind artifacts and over 100 pictographs, or rock paintings. The oldest rock art in the cave is over 2,000 years old.

Viewing platform is open again. Nice path up to the main cave with gravel paths for the others. Lots of history in one small area. There is a small camping area below the main building.

Go see this before it is completely faded. The pictographs are still there, but not for long. The area is beautiful and worth the short drive from town. Bring a picnic lunch and soak in the serenity. The road and parking are good for trailers and RVs, although the parking lot is not big enough for any super sized RVs.

According to the website the viewing platform for the Pictograph Cave is closed until further notice due to a major rock slide.

Great place to stop to have a picnic with the family. The small park offers a great place to stretch your legs and enjoy the scenic countryside. The short hike is great for all ages and pets. We were able to park two trucks with trailers on the facilities.

Although the main cave was not open for viewing (due to a rock slide) our family of six (kids aged 3,5,9 and 11) enjoyed the short hike on the well maintained path. The area is beautiful and we were glad we stopped. Also, the park fee was waived because the main cave was closed.

Small, but worth stopping. Some of the pictographs are hard to see. We are glad we took the time to stop.

Pictograph Cave State Park is a great place to fall back in time…all the way back to the prehistoric days!

Start in the visitor’s center to learn about the area, and then head out on the short loop trail to see the pictographs for yourself! There are over 100 rock paintings within the Pictograph, Middle and Ghost caves, some as ancient as 2,000 years old! Bring your binoculars!

We enjoyed stopping here on our October 2018 road trip. There is a visitor center, paths up to caves, benches and picnic tables. The markings had mostly faded on the cave walls, but you could still make out where some had been before fading. The park had posted signs of what was originally on the cave wall. They allow dogs as long as they are on leashes. We did see a rattlesnake crossing one of the paths up to the cave. So we had to watch that our dog stayed right next to us on the path.

It was a great place to stop on our trip. A good learning experience for everyone. The kids each got an arrowhead from the visitor center.
