Lower Calf Creek Falls

Boulder, Utah USA

“a stunning secret beach!”

Calf Creek Falls is a southern Utah landmark and the major feature of the BLM's Calf Creek Recreation Area. Walking between mineral-streaked cliffs of Navajo Sandstone, hikers pass beaver ponds and pre-historic rock art sites enroute to the 126-foot-high Lower Calf Creek Falls.Roundtrip distance to the falls is 5-1/2 miles. While little elevation change is encountered, most of the trail is sandy, and can be very strenuous walking, particularly in warm weather. However, the falls area, once reached, is a delightfully cool, shady haven well worth the effort. The hike begins in the Calf Creek campground located on Hwy 12, 15 miles east of Escalante. Hikers are charged a day use fee of $2.00 per vehicle. The 6.0 mile round trip hike to the 126 foot lower falls is on a developed trail adjacent to Calf Creek. The hike is moderately difficult due to sandy sections. An interpretive brochure is available at the trailhead. The hike can be hot, especially during summer months, and hikers must carry adequate water. This is a good introductory hike to the Escalante Canyons. Dogs must be leashed.

This was such a beautiful place to stop and relax. The setting was so peaceful and surrounded by lush greenery and calming Calf Creek. The hike was stunning to the falls. Easy to moderate & yes a sandy trail made it a bit annoying but at the end of the trailhead was the perfect oasis. Cool calming mist from the waterfall cooled everyone off. Bring a towel & swim suit if you plan on enjoying the beach. Hiking the trail between the soaring cliffs was breathtaking. Be sure to stop at marker #8 to see the ancient Anastazi pictograph. (Pick up trail guide at the trailhead). This is a hike that will remain as one of your top 10.

A must-see if you're traveling through Escalante, UT. Pretty easy hike, well-known, and therefore can be busy. Start your hike early in the morning for a better chance of having the falls to yourself. And yes, the campground is great! But first-come, first-serve so get there by midday to make sure you get a site.

I forgot to mention on the above review that this site has a wonderful campground ideal for travelers traveling Hwy 12 between Bryce Canyon & Capitol Reef National Parks. Ara
