“Petting Zoo and recreational trails”
Welcome to the Retreat Farm in Brattleboro, Vermont. We are an historical site and a recreation center that offers much to the community and visitors. The farm owns 475 acres of land and operates a popular petting farm on a seasonal basis. The Retreat Farm is unique because of its architecture, function and location. The land needs of the farm allow it to keep its meadows open for agricultural and recreational purposes. Its history of being part of a large psychiatric hospital is intriguing. A visit to the working jewel will result in a greater understanding and appreciation of a rural way of life. In 2001, the Foundation purchased the Retreat Farm in neighboring Brattleboro; preserving & protecting 475 acres of land and historic buildings in a partnership with the Preservation Trust of Vermont and the Vermont Land Trust. As a result, there is an ongoing rehabilitation project to restore the grandeur of the structures and the ongoing preservation of the land. We are next door to sister company Grafton Village Cheese Co. which includes a production facility and a wine and cheese shop. This new creamery and store live in concert with the existing historical buildings, land, Retreat recreational trails and the petting farm.
one of my favorite places in the world. staff is very helpful and trusting, yet really let you do your own thing with its wards. all the creatures are very social, the only stinky area is the pig pen, and everyone looks immaculately cared for and happy!
