“Something straight out of a sci-fi movie”
Natural formations of mud mountains and bubbles, like something straight out of a sci-fi movie. Family-friendly type of natural feature, kids will love the sounds and gooeyness of the area. The Mud Volcanoes at the Salton Sea are an interesting geological phenomena. They are created by water, gas and mud pushed to the surface through geothermal activity below the earth’s crust. It is now thought that this activity is related to the San Andreas Fault which terminates near Bombay Beach in the Salton Sea Basin. The area where the volcanoes formed at the Salton Sea is relatively small, but contains quite a few cone formations as well as many mud pots of bubbling mud and water. Depending on the conditions, sometimes you can see the mud shooting up through the cones adding to the base of the current volcanoes and creating new ones. It’s an interesting place to see if you are ever in the Salton Sea area.
I went yesterday.. The photo above is misleading, but I took some pictures and I'll upload them on here! Anyways, this looks pretty much like piles of rocks.. But if you get out of the car and get closer it is super cool!! You can here it bubbling and hissing! Really amazing sight!!
Although the photos are a bit misleading, the place is amazing.
The photo above is SO misleading. The view from the road looks like a few anthills and not much else. The smell is pretty bad too. Skip it.
This is indeed private property oh and by the power company right there. There are also signs saying no trespassing, but the local seem to think that was more of a legal matter in case something happens to you. Some of my pots were cool. Some of them were warm. There was a smell but that’s to be expected. This was a neat geological experience
Not worth the drive out in the middle of no where. Couldn’t really see them
The mud volcanos have become any piles.
Not worth the trip. Not allowed on property to get closer look.
You have to park and get out of the car for this one. Looks tiny and boring from the road, but really interesting up close. You can see and hear the bubbling of the mud as the mountains are growing and taking shape. If around the area, should definitely check it out
Easy to get to ... 100ft off the road
I'm not sure if I visited this at the wrong time, but what a disappointment. It just looked like dry dirt piles. A bit out of the way to drive there just for nothing.
