“an exciting place for tourists & locals alike”
WELCOME! Steeped in history and charm, the Charleston City Market is a popular destination for all who visit the Holy City. Open 365 days per year, the Market is an exciting place for tourists and local Charleston residents alike. Market Hall stands facing Meeting Street as the main entrance to four blocks of open-air buildings. Strolling through the Market you will encounter a wide assortment of vendors selling high quality products including paintings, pottery, Charleston's famous sweetgrass baskets, casual and fine dining & more!
I was hoping for more of a flea market feel but we still enjoyed walking through all the vendors. Prices weren't cheap but the setup is neat and the bathrooms are modern and clean.
The building at the front that you have to walk under is actually a Civil War Museum. They have some incredible & rare artifacts. There is also an extensive collection of documents for tracing genealogies & other info about the Civil War period. A must for history buffs. They have no real set hours though. If you see the Confederate flag hanging outside at the top of the stairs, it is open. Most locals say expect to see it from 11ish to 2ish weekdays. The older ladies who run it, members of the Daughters of the Confederacy, open it when they feel like it. So if you notice it is open , you better take advantage & to at that moment.
While this is one of the most popular attractions in the area it's not very fulfilling. There are a lot of the same vendors and they sell cheap stuff. There are a few vendors that clearly work hard at their products and hand make them. It changes everyday so you never know what your going to see there.
This place is fabulous! This is a must-visit in Charleston.
This place is fabulous. Most of it is open-air. Lots of jewelry, tshirts, candles, etc.
We enjoyed walking through this historic market. All kinds of things to see and buy. There is even an air conditioned area to beat the heat for a bit. All the vendors are friendly except for one in particular that day...
While we were there on a busy Sunday in Charleston it began to rain heavily and the walkway became extremely crowded. We were shuffling with the flow of people going both ways when the kids saw something on the other side they were interested in. I pulled our stroller to the side to let others get by while the wife and kids checked out the other booth for a couple of minutes (literally.) I was in front of about 4 feet of a vendor's 10 foot sweet grass basket table and she asked me to backtrack through the mob about 30 yards to an open area near an entrance. There were NO customers looking at her items and I told her I would only be a minute and would not be moving, pointing out my wife and kids on the opposite side. She became belligerent and pointed me out to a man a few feet away as my wife and kids approached and we were on our way again.
Good place to walk
