“fab fossil hunting!”
Once a largely undeveloped portion of the huge (15,000-acre) Indiana Army Ammunition plant, Charlestown State Park is located in southern Indiana. The park is easily accessible, located 8 miles east of I-65, on State Road 62. With scenic vistas of the Fourteenmile Creek valley and the Ohio River, with elevation changes of over 200 feet, Charlestown has much to offer the visitor with its rugged hills and deep ravines. While hiking the rugged terrain you will see Devonian fossil outcrops and areas of karst sinkhole topography. Bird watchers will enjoy the 72 species of birds, including bluebirds, black vultures and an occasional bald eagle.

The lots are big and feature a picnic table and fire ring. There are paved walkways to the nice playground and to the bath house. The back of each lot is a thick brush which adds to the sense of privacy. The water was not turned on for the season yet but there was a water filling station. Our 30 amp service was strong. Remember that this is a big state park and you have distance between you and some of the camp features. We thought we would take a look at the Ohio River which borders the park. It was probably a 4 mile drive to get there. This is a great place to land and relax and ride bikes but may not be an easy walk to various attractions within the park. We weren't able to see the fossil dig but hope to return to do so. The town of nearby Charleston has many services and restaurants. We will gladly stay here again. $25.
Beautiful state park. Sites are large and thoughtfully spread out. Worth the $. Park has several hikes.
The best state park in Indiana.
We had a great electric site. Across from our’s, #82, is a wooded area, so you don’t look across the road at another RV. The yard area was grassy and very large, with a fire ring and picnic table. Our 38’ RV fit fine with the Jeep, sideways in front. The roads are paved and great for walking the dogs, biking etc. Internet comes and goes but overall good. We had great AT&T service. Dish came in great, even with all the beautiful trees. Peaceful place. During the week, the electric only area has been pretty quiet. The full hookup sites were not as private and more crowded. There are water fill-up and dump stations as soon as you come into the campground area. 2 of each.

FHU site that was easy to pull into. Nice greenery all around and several hiking trails to choose from. We chose the Rose Island Trail and it was nice to see the history at different points along the way. Trek back up was tough!
A bit confusing with no one attending the park or campsite entrance points when we pulled in at check in time (1 pm). Called the number at camp entrance point and was instructed to go to the Park Office after setup.

Spent one night on our way out west. Clean park, good site spacing and quiet.
We would definitely like to stay in warmer weather to enjoy the area more, but no complaints this time around.

Nice park. Lots of the sites had large yards around them. My kids enjoyed the playground. Very nice boat ramp to the Ohio. Easy drive into Clarksville/New Albany/Jeffersonville and downtown Louisville. Make sure you check out another state park close by, Falls of the Ohio. Very cool.
If you're coming from the north, don't take 160 unless you are in a small rig. It was very tight and windy. Go on down to the 62 exit, it's way quicker, and easier too.
Will definitely stay there again. Only downside was that our sewer hookup was uphill from the camper.

This is a big, beautiful state park with lots of history. You have room to hike (13 miles of trails), room at your site, and many things close to see. Being from the south, we assumed electric also meant with water, it does not. That was our mistake. Next time we will try to plan for a full hook up site, but we did just fine without water hookups. We had water in our fresh tank and they have a place to fill up with water. The showers are clean (mildly annoying to have to push the button every 30 seconds when rinsing thick hair). The park staff and hosts are friendly. And one of the trails is like a walk in history! The sites aren’t too close to each other, so you don’t feel like you are up in your neighbors business. This was our first visit to Indiana and we look forward to another!

If we had been at Charlestown before other Indiana State Parks, I would have ranked the others lower. Charlestown is beautiful, exceptionally well laid out with lots to do. Our site was not full hook-up but the inside loop sites are. I HIGHLY recommend this as a top state park in the region.

We were in one of the full hook up sites. This particular site sloped quite a bit and our front wheels were off the ground to be close to level. You also might need the sewer slinky holder to help it go downhill. We chose this site from google maps to be easy to back our big rig into, and that it was. Depending on site, this campground offers lots of privacy with space and bushes between sites. We really enjoyed the ranger led “hike” on Saturday morning with the history of Rose Island. It was an easy stroll beyond the big hill to get there and the ranger will drive those that need it up and down in a van. Also enjoyed trail #6 near the Ohio River. If you plan to go into Louisville, just be aware of the toll road/bridge (our IPass gave us the discounted charge). Also recommend booking bourbon tours in advance. Maybe it’s just bc everyone is tired of the pandemic shut in. Beyond the nightly rate, we also had to pay $9 upon first entry with our out of state tags. I think in-state was $7.
