“Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright”
House designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Located near Fallingwater. Designed on a hexagonal module, Kentuck Knob is a small one story Usonian house. Usonian, meaning affordable for the common people, was a signature design of Wright. Both dramatic and serene, the house, situated just below the crest of the hills, appears almost part of the mountain itself and stands two thousand fifty feet above sea level.Kentuck Knob’s construction materials of native sandstone and tidewater red cypress blend naturally with the surroundings. The truly functional kitchen is the architectural core of the home. Its walls of stone not only anchor the two wings of the house but they also rise to penetrate the horizontal line of the copper roof. An open floor plan, cantilevered overhangs and great expanses of glass effortlessly integrate the inside with the outside. Stretching to the east, just beyond the back terrace, is a breathtaking panorama of the Youghiogheny River Gorge and the beautiful Laurel Highlands mountains that surround it.
While Fallingwater gets most of the attention, there’s another remarkable Frank Lloyd Wright home just a mere 7 miles down the road from his famous masterpiece. Inspired by their friends, the Kaufmanns (owners of Fallingwaters), Bernardine and I.N. Hagan asked Wright if he could design a house for them, despite the fact Wright was well into his 80s and busy with the Guggenheim, several other homes, and the Beth Shalom Synagogue. He agreed and designed the entire home, Kentuck Knob, with only one visit to the site.
Opened for tours in 1996, the house and grounds are pretty spectacular. After your house tour, spend some time walking the grounds where you’ll find over 30 modern art sculptures.
Fallingwater is definitely worth a visit, but while you're there, you might as well visit the Kentuck Knob too, for comparison. It's more of a hidden gem-- not as famous, but just as cozy and awesome and pretty. Plus, the current owners put a sculpture garden in-- it includes a piece of the Berlin Wall!
