“one of the oldest state parks in the US”

Conveniently located near I-75 in middle Georgia, Indian Springs is one of the oldest state parks in the United States and a popular spot for outdoor recreation.  For centuries, Creek Indians collected the spring water for its healing qualities, and during the 1800s, the area was a bustling resort town. Today, visitors can still sample the spring water flowing inside the stone Spring House built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression.   Park guests can enjoy wading in Sandy Creek or swimming in McIntosh Lake, named for Creek Chief William McIntosh who signed an illegal treaty deeding Indian land to Georgia in 1825. A small museum, open seasonally, highlights Creek Indians, the resort era and CCC history. Cottages and campsites may be reserved for overnight stays.

I work for a florida state park and if our park was in this condition we would be shut down and everyone fired off. Trash and debris is everywhere, bathrooms are god awful, construction materials take over most park grounds and what isnt are closed buildings where you cant even fully look at the park. One young boy driving a truck around and four ladies sitting down chatting in the office. You would think this place would be better kept up with so many on one shift. Its heart wrenching knowing this beautiful place is being ran into the ground.

It's hard to beat staying in a Georgia state park, especially one that was built and has the charm of the CCC. Before I share the great things about the park, here are couple suggestions for first time RV campers with larger rigs.

There are two entrances into the park. Take the first entrance after you pass through the Indian Spring community. The second entrance will also work, though after registering, you'll have to drive out of the park and then back in to be able to turn around and head towards the campground. Enjoy the registration process. The old homestead where you check in is breathtaking and be sure to enjoy a glass or two of the spring water.

The campground section for RV's is all first come first serve and if you look at the map there are three loops all accessed from one entry road. As you drive in there is a dumpster and pull off area at the stop sign before you enter the campsites. I would recommend pulling over there and walking through the campground with your site marker, picking your site and then driving in. Looking at the map, the first two loops on the left are accessed with a one lane road and we were a bit nervous driving in hoping someone wasn't coming in the other direction. To us the section with the best sites and most with lake views was the middle loop.

Not all the sites are level, but if you arrive on a Sunday or early in the week, you'll be able to pick the best ones. We enjoyed the park trails, did a little geocaching and explored the spring and old CCC buildings. On the weekend the village of Indian Springs opens up and we enjoyed walking through the town and having ice cream at the local hand dip shop. While you are there you also have to check out Dauset Trails and take a short drive into Jackson for some great dining options, groceries and more.

Indian Springs State Park is a non-site specific, we book in advance and when you arrive you pick your spot. There was hardly anyone there it was early June. We loved our site it was level, big and woodsy/private. We had Water & electric & cable, there's a dump station onsite.
The check in station is an old house and has a good little camp store. We had the lake below us you could see the water.

If your going to camp in Georgia State Parks a lot it's worth buying the park pass. Senior/Military rate was $32.00 and for that you get in any GA state park for a year, and you get a passport with 4 rows of 10 that you get stamped for every night you stay & after 10 you get a free night. We went to High Falls that is 10 minutes from Indian Springs, many other thru out GA too.

They had just drained the lake to work on the dam so you couldn't swim in the lake but we could Kayak which we did. There is a boat launch there made it easy to get the kayak in & out.

We saw so many lightning bugs, really enjoyed it. Hummingbirds, Hawks, deer, and more.

Just before the entrance to the campground loop we were in there is an old graveyard it's pretty cool.

Places close by:
Dauset Trails is close by great place to hike and a cool wildlife rescue area with all kinds of animals.
Little town of Juliette is cute, don't blink you will drive right by it. Places to eat & shopping there.
Jarrell Plantation was interesting, it's an old Gin Mill.

There is a grocery store (Ingles) not to far in town. Found a gas station that was less than $2.00 per gallon, cash only & Regular gas only on the way to the grocery store.

We will go back!

Indian Springs State Park is in Flovilla, Georgia. It is thought to be the oldest state park in the nation. There are some areas that they are upgrading right now  but it doesn't affect your RV stay.  They have a lovely lending library that was centrally located by the bathhouse in campground #2.

People flocked to this area to enjoy the healing properties of the springs.  If you read the paperwork on what is actually in the water here you'd be surprised. Arsenic is even listed as something that has curative powers! Nearly everything in the water has something lauded for helping the bowels.

Centuries ago the Creek Indians lived here and then in the 1800s the area became a resort town. The state park was built during the Great Depression when the Civil Conservation Corps was in full swing.

Our visit was amazing. We had beautiful spring weather, good neighbors, and a site that was private. The camp host, Kelly, was amazing.  We stayed at campground #2 on site #77. It overlooked placid McIntosh Lake.

You never know what you're going to see when camping. One lady we met had a really interesting  motorized/electric scooter on three wheels that she could either ride standing up like she was driving a Segway or sitting down like she was riding a bike. She said it helped her if they parked too far from the bathhouse. Ingenious for anyone with trouble getting around.  It folds up small so it's easy to pack in the back of a truck. Apparently Camping World has it for approximately $900 but she got it online for around $700 from the manufacturer. Cool!

There were several places to go hiking here but you have to drive to them if you don't just want to hike around the campground. Back where you sign in at the  historic Idlewilde Park office, you can sample some of the spring water before getting started on your nature hike. We used the app MapMyWalk so we could see to turn around at 2 miles.  The hike was strenuous at times, meandering at other times, and beautiful the entire time. Many mountain bikers came by on the path so we had to be extra aware of our surroundings. There were beautiful bridges, swamp areas teeming with life, and of course beautiful lake views. Turtles balanced precariously on the edges logs as we walked by.

We definitely want to come back here again in the future!

My family stayed here just for one night on our way to the Georgia mountains. Had a really good time. Only downfall was that our neighbor next to us literally could not take his eyes off of my wife. I get it dude, she’s definitely attractive, but come on man, when I making straight stares into your face and you can’t stop looking at her take it to a little weird. Other than that, great time !

Lots to see and do in the area. Great restaurant in town called Yahola Creek Restaurant, don't miss this one, park behind corner store.

Lots of great sites. If picking again, the sites facing the water are really nice.

Good place for kayaking or fishing. Many people just play in the Rapids which is very refreshing.

There is a very fun multi use trail for mountain biking.

Loved this place.
