“has stood as silent sentry for over 200 years”
Built to defend the river approach to the Washington, DC, Fort Washington has stood as silent sentry for over 200 years. As technologies advanced so did Fort Washington, from the brick and stone of the 19th century to the concrete and steel of the 20th century.
Great for some low-key hiking and fishing! Also, history lovers will really love the museum and exploring the old fort. Bonus: it's free to visit when the fort is closed!!
Both the fort and surrounding park are beautiful spaces to explore. Many locals don't realize the fort even exists (which is surprising given the size of the structure) and I've never run into large crowds.
The place is perfect for afternoon walks. Enjoy the serene and peaceful environment and the wonderful history behind it. The staff there are also very informative.
