“A perfect example of a 1940's ice cream shop”
Carl's Ice Cream (also known as "Carl's Frozen Custard" or, most often, simply "Carl's") is a roadside ice cream stand located at 2200 Princess Anne Street, Fredericksburg, Virginia. Since 2005, the stand, with its Art Moderne architectural facade, has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Since then, the 1940s era Electro Freeze machines have produced the frozen treat. When served, the ice cream is hand scooped, with a signature “twist” added to the top by the disher. Carl's sells only four flavors (vanilla, chocolate, strawberry and pineapple), but also offers sundaes, shakes, malts, frozen slushes and slush floats. The stand has what can only be called a devoted following, to the point that the line of customers often stretches around the building, even in bad weather. Carl's is closed each year from the Sunday before Thanksgiving until the Friday of Presidents Day Weekend. This is because Sponseller would close the shop each year for hunting season, and the current owners (also Sponseller family members) have continued the tradition. - from Wikipedia
A Fredericksburg institution, this is where the locals know to go. It's not the prettiest or most atmospheric part of F'burg, but the ice cream is the best. It's just soft-serve, no hard ice cream. Prices are reasonable, but be prepared to wait, there's always a long line!
Great old fashioned ice cream. We walked the mile from downtown to here. Some parts a few blocks away from Carls are a bit sketchy.
There's a reason people wait in line for this place! It's legendary! Great ice cream at good prices and a cool history to boot. I'm of the belief you stop at every old ice cream stand, ever. Period.
Ask a local where to go for the best soft serve and they will point you here.
It's simple and delicious.
Growing up here, going to Carl's is a special weekend treat. Even before homecoming you can see high school students stopping by before the dance!
This is the real frozen custard, the way I remember it as a child growing up. My husband had never had it before but right away could tell the difference. Delicious.
Great custard! Prices are reasonable. A few curbs for seating- parking lot is small.
I went here as a kid, I'm glad to see it's still around!!
