The Painted Rock Petroglyph Site is a collection of hundreds of ancient petroglyphs near the town of Theba, Arizona, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. The site is operated and maintained by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and includes an improved campground as well as an informative walking trail showcasing the petroglyphs. Prior to 1989, the site was part of Painted Rock State Park, which included camping facilities on the nearby Painted Rock Reservoir, referred to as the "Lake Unit". When the state turned control of the park over to the BLM in 1989, the Lake Unit was closed due to concerns over pollutants in the Gila River and is not maintained by the BLM. Currently, there is no public access to Painted Rock Dam or the Lake Unit.

Confirmed by 4 users | Last reported on April 01, 2024We stayed here for three nights during Indigenous People's Day weekend, great desert views, perfect sunsets, and a very peaceful experience. We paid $4.00 per night with our America the Beautiful Senior Pass, this is one of the best BLM campgrounds we have visited. The Park Ranger stopped by to welcome us and to answer our questions, he was very friendly and helpful.
Access is easy, an 11-mile two-lane road from the interstate to the paved turnoff road that leads to the campground. The campground drive is well graded with hard-pack stone and is easy to manuever through the campground. The entire campground was clean and well maintained with updated vault toilets. The camp sites are spacious and well distanced, allowing for privacy to create a great camping experience. Generators are allowed from 8am to 8pm, there is no water, electricity, or dump station, however the trash receptical is located at the front of the campground. Each camp site has a picnic table and fire-ring grill, however during our visit fire restrictions were in place.
The Petroglyph Site is next to the campground, a very educational and worth while adventure to absorb the history of the area.
We will definately return again!

We camped here 4 nights and enjoyed quiet evenings and open space. The petroglyphs are neat to see and the sunsets were gorgeous. The campground is great, wasn't full at all (although I really wonder if it ever is) and the campers that were there were all spaced out nicely. We went based on the 2 bars of T-Mobile another user claimed to have while there which we were only able to get with our booster, albeit with insufficient speed. We had to rely on the Verizon signal in order to work as it was very strong. There is a small dumpster, which we were surprised to see so we were able to dump our trash regularly, which was nice because the flies were INSANE. If you stay here I strongly suggest you have screens on your rig. They were annoying, but didn't ruin our time! Oh, and the women's pit toilet was the cleanest pit toilet I have EVER been in. Don't know if it's always that way but wow! No smell whatsoever and it's cleaned regularly. People didn't abide by the generator rules, which is annoying anywhere, but whatevs.

We came here to see the painted rocks. Other campers had told us about this place. Nightly rate was $8 or $4 with a Golden Pass.

Quite a few large sites and at least 4 handicap sites. Very quiet but the generator hours are 8:00 to 8:00. Each site has a concrete picnic table and a fire ring. No services, dump site or water. It’s a eleven mile drive in from the freeway on a paved road. Road in the park are gravel.

We stayed here one night to break up a long drive from Yuma to Tucson. This is a no reservations campground. The sites here are spread out nicely, easy to access gravel road in campground. The petroglyph site was within a very short walking distance from our campsite and super cool to see! No hookups, but did have a garage dumpster, which was nice. The stars are amazing at night! Would definitely stay here again.

Arrived on a Monday in April around noon. 60 spots. We were literally the only ones there other than the camp host. After driving by 59 empty spots, we settled at a site.
The pit toilets are spotless. Hand sanitizer and toilet paper are included. It’s walking distance to the petroglyph site which is at the front of the park.
The camp hosts came by after a couple of hours to introduce themselves. Very friendly and welcoming! They told us the campground hadn’t seen more than 40 spots taken out of the 60. This is as about as close to guaranteed as you can get for first come first served.
Each site has a fire ring and picnic table. AT&T service varied between 3 bars of 3g, 1 bar of LTE to no bars. That was with the WeBoost booster. We saw some reviews about flies.... we didn’t encounter many to be a problem.
Easy access off I-8. Maybe 15 min off the highway. Great spot for a night between SD and Tucson.

For $2 a vehicle you can’t beat it. We visited Oct 18, 2121, it was us and two others with 60 sites to choose from. Large, well spaced sites, very level, cement tables and fire ring. Pit toilet’s were very clean. Beautiful sunrise…

We got here around 4PM with 4 others in the whole CG. During the wee hours another 5 entered but left that morning.
Only 3 Pit toilets I can see; one in the main CG, one in the group area along with one by the day use.
Compared to Petroglyph National Monument in NM this is paltry.
Might be better in the spring with wild flowers.
Hosts pleasant said this is their second year. Both were immunized but contracted covid from a family gathering where they didn’t know some people were not immunized. A month later wife was still unable to smell. Just a side note
No shade anywhere.

My heart dropped as I could see, from a mile away, glittering rigs in the distance. I was prepared to turn back but pushed on. Turns out the campground might have been at 25% capacity which surprised me but shouldn’t have. Even if it had been more heavily occupied the sites are large and spread out.
Grounds look to be well maintained and drive in was uneventful.
