“vintage school house erected in 1914”
One thing recorded history tells us, is that the towns’ people wanted to make sure that their children were given a good education so that one day they would make their mark on the world. One and two room school houses were opened around town and the out lying areas and teachers were brought in from all over to give the children of Glen Carbon a good education that would prepare them for the outside world. The vintage school house erected in 1914 is now the home of the Glen Carbon Heritage Museum, which will be celebrating 100 years of continued service to the community in 2014. We are pleased to share this building with you complete with the original hard wood floors and tin ceilings. Great lengths were taken to restore the building back to its original grandeur. The community is honored that the building has been in constant use since its grand opening back in 1914. It has served as a school until the 1950’s when the new grade school was built one block away, it then became the village administration offices and police station until the new village hall was built, upon which time it became the reading room, teen town and a small version of the museum that was house in one classroom. With the building of the Centennial Library, the museum was able to branch out into the entire building, where it remains today.
