“discovered in 1804”

Grand Caverns was discovered in 1804 by Bernard (Barnette) Weyer while trying to retrieve one of his traps. Weyers Cave opened for tours in 1806, making it the oldest continually operating show cave in the U.S. The caverns were also called the Grottoes of the Shenandoah until named Grand Caverns in 1926.

Grand Caverns was declared a National Natural Landmark in 1973. In 1974 the caverns and surrounding acreage was gifted to the Upper Valley Regional Park Authority by its then owner Gladys Kellow and became known as Grand Caverns Regional Park. On October 1, 2009, the Town of Grottoes took possession of its namesake caverns, and consequently, the UVRPA will dissolve.

The caverns are majestic, historical, and very cold. My husband and I really enjoyed the walking tour and took many very cool pictures. Great for people of all ages!

Great place! Really worth the visit! We went there on a whim and it's the best stop we've made so far! I would recommend it to everyone who comes to visit. It is chilly so I would wear a jacket!

This was a great spot for a descent price. Our visit was far from perfect, but it was not really the fault of the facility. Overall, the two eleven-year-olds were amazed at the truly unique rock formations. It was truly beautiful. The girls enjoyed the area and we even got a GeoCache on the property, if you're into that.

It was really beautiful. About a mile walk through the cavern and it probably took about 45 minutes.

Easy to access and jump right in on a tour of the underground caverns with an informative guide. A 30 minute or so tour is about the right length...and many of the things you'd expect to see in an underground cavern are here. Cool at 54 degrees Fahrenheit so may need a jacket...but they have loaner jackets there too for the tour. Some sort of dinosaur trail nearby too that didn't see...but assumed statues of dinosaurs along a trail.
