“the only "frost-free" botanical garden in the continental United States”
The Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden is the only "frost-free" botanical garden in the continental United States. A tropical environment with ample rain allows most trees to retain their leaves in the dry season (December through late May). It is home to many endangered and threatened flora and fauna. Unlike traditional botanical gardens, this garden advocates the importance of native plants and species through education in a natural conservation habitat. Tropical forests of the world hold at least half of all the variety of life on Earth. Moreover, the species found with the Caribbean are among the richest in plant and animal life on the planet.
Cool to stop in and see what the land looked like before it was built up. It's a natural place with a bunch of paths to walk through. Expect mostly greenery and natural back drops and not colorful flowers. This stop can be 30 minutes or longer (depends on kids, picnic, etc). Bring bug spray.
Took my six year old and has a fantastic time. We were on a tight schedule and the 1 1/2 we spent there flew by. Tons of fun for kids who love nature trails, beautiful trees, butterflies, turtles, iguanas, and lizards. The quiet and shady paths were perfect for a hot day. Lots of trails to explore. And the entrance fee was super reasonable. Highly recommend this for families.
This was a nice, quiet get away. All different paths to explore and plants to see. It was worth seeing at least once.
