“A Key West landmark where clothing is optional”
Favorite watering hole of such legends as Ernest Hemingway, Truman Capote, Tennessee Williams, Shel Silverstein and Jimmy Buffet, Captain Tony’s Saloon is not just a bar it is a piece of living history. The saloon’s namesake, fishing boat captain gunrunner, gambling casino operator and Mayor of Key West the late Captain Tony, was a larger than life character who was often described as a dropout from a Hemingway novel. Originally built in 1851 as an icehouse that doubled as a morgue Captain Tony’s Saloon is steeped in history. When you stop in for a cold one, remember you are drinking where legends have been drinking for decades.
This bar is awesome and certainly put the Sloppy Joe's on Duval Street to shame, not so much because it does something much better, but the ambiance is more authentic here. It's a nice place to grab a couple of drinks after enjoying some fish tacos across the street. There's usually live music, too!
Of all of the popular bars in Key West, this was by far the most comfortable for a midday drink, which was surprisingly good! I recommend the Captain Tony's Amber Ale if you've had enough rum. If you stick around long enough, you might find a business card, dollar, or bra that belongs to someone you know.
Ernest Hemingway, Truman Capote, Shel Silverstein, Tennessee Williams and the Mayor of Margaritaville himself, Jimmy Buffet, have all enjoyed a drink (or 10) at Captain Tony's Saloon in Key West, Florida. What the tourist guide books often fail to note is the fact that the dive bar used to be a morgue. In fact, there are still bodies buried underneath the bar stools.
Nice little bar. there is even a tree in it! !! lots of bras & money nailed to the ceiling. very local, laid back.
Great spot some of the "locals" took us too...a little loud and dark but a fun place! Tradition: Toss quarters in the fish's mouth for good luck!
Typical Key West staple. Dark, old, the odd bra strung up on the rafters. If you are looking for a traditional Duval experience, this place is a must (I like it better than most). They are known for their punch (too sweet for me, but worth a sip or two to experience).
