Antonio and Jeni Moretti, with over 35 years in the wine business between them, specifically chose the Santa Rita Hills as home. Upon discovering the uniqueness of the wine region, they knew that they wanted to be a part of the appellation’s growth and help with its recognition. They believe in the agricultural richness, unique micro-climate and the wine talent of the region. After spending time getting to know the local vineyards and wineries, they have chosen the wines that they feel are the best representation of those varietals in the region. They use one of the most talented and famous winemakers of the Santa Rita Hills to make their wine. With Moretti Syrah, Pinot Noir and Bianchetto you will get an excellent glass of wine that truly reflects the terroir of this special region.
The Traveling Winers on Santa Barbara Wine Trail
Our fortuitous visit to Moretti occurred very spontaneously during a planned trailing day in the Lompoc Wine Ghetto. Basically what occurred was that we almost always plan to visit 3 wineries per day. This allows us to spend plenty of time visiting, learning and tasting at each winery and yet still have driving time between wineries built into the day. What we didn’t know before pulling into the industrial park area in Lompoc was that two of our wineries for the day were in the same block – same parking lot to be more precise. So, needless to say, since our first visit went pretty quickly and we didn’t have to travel far to our next visit, we had about an hour or so to spare. We decided to pop in at the next door over winery called Moretti Wine Company. They have a nice little back patio that we found inviting so decided to pay them a visit. And unanimously, we were all glad that we did!
As it turns out, we stumbled in on a rare day when the owner, Jeni Moretti, was manning the store. Jeni has been in the Italian wine industry for over 22 years. Jeni is married to Antonio Moretti, the Italian component of this cute couple. They opened Moretti Wine Company in 2012 and produce about 500 cases per year. They purchase their grapes from other vineyards and make their wine off-site at a different location. With the large number of tasting rooms throughout California, this is becoming more and more of a common practice. A bit controversial about whether a good practice or not, but nonetheless, is being done more and more.
They make their wines in an Italian style, picking earlier and therefore allowing the grapes to remain more acidic than is typical in California. They want their wines to be more food friendly, more balanced wine. We did enjoy their wines very much and each bought a bottle or two.
In their back room, they have an area with a large, very thick wood table (picnic style) and in that room are a number of photographs placed on canvas that were all taken by Jeni. They are so good! We asked her if she sells them and she said no, but was thinking about it. We told her she should! So if you go and find one that you fall in love with, you might approach her on the subject.
Our time with Jeni was well spent and we all felt like we were fast, fast friends. The Traveling Winers would highly suggest that you give this winery a try if you are in the Lompoc Wine Ghetto area. Tell Jeni we said “Hello!”
