“walk thru a tunnel of books in the Labyrinth”

The Labyrinth features a massive, chaotic, maze-like space housing more than 100,000 used books, all at $1 each. It features doors that lead nowhere, time-travel portholes looking into an artist's rendition of outer space, and "secret passage ways" leading into hidden book rooms.

People seemed to especially enjoy selling their used books to us, as one of the last places in LA still buying books.  Our inventory quickly overflowed the shelves, and at the end of our lease June 2011 the Last Bookstore moved to the 10,000 sq. ft location at 5th & Spring St.  A record shop and coffee bar filled out the ground floor September, 2011.  Most recently, we expanded another 6,100 sq. ft. by opening up the Labyrinth Above the Last Bookstore on our mezzanine level, with over 100,000 books all priced at one dollar each!  Now we’ve become the largest independent bookstore in California buying and selling used & new books and records.

The name was chosen with irony, but it has become a self-fulfilling prophecy as physical bookstores are dying out like dinosaurs from the meteoric impact of Amazon and e-books.  With our constant turnover of stock, regular musical and literary events, and coffee and vinyl LP shop, we book-lovers at the Last Bookstore hope to last as long as we can in downtown LA’s vibrant new community.  Join the cause!  Buy, sell, trade, and above all read real books…before they’re gone.

Absolutely gorgeous decoration throughout the bookstore. The art gallery is really cool, and all of the book sculptures and genre themed rooms are incredibly awesome. They have a large selection of books of every kind. They have the $1 books on the second floor, as well as other cheaper books, and new books on the first floor. You never know what you can find, and you'll need a couple hours to thoroughly explore and browse the entire store.

i had the worst experience with the staff at this store, offensive & scary. I tried to do what they wanted & she yelled at me. I agreed OK I'll put them down, but she raised her voice again: "You put those books down now!"

I selected three books, and wondered about two collections & what my husband's opinion of them might be. Basically, I was looking at dropping $50+ in kids books alone. I called my husband asking where he was. Excitedly, "You have to come see the second floor! It's amazing." I was now basically in the middle of the store, looking around. I laughed & said "Ok, how do I get to this fabled second floor?"

An older woman told me "Use the elevator, but put those books down first." I said to her "Ok", nodded, then said to my husband "OK, I'll wait here for you." I don't know if the lady heard me say I'd stay where I was or if she didn't understand that I was holding a phone to my ear, but she raised her voice at that point, saying "You can't go upstairs, put those books down first."

At this point, I put both hands out in front of me, placatingly, faced her, said "Ok, I'll put them down. I'm not going upstairs." I was holding my phone in one hand & two books in the other - had my hands been free it would have looked like I was trying to pacify an angered animal. She again raised her voice "You put those books down now!"

That's when I escaped, leaving the books there, not buying anything and promptly left the store without my husband. I won't return to The Last Bookstore. I wasn't carrying a purse or any bags of any sort. I wouldn't put books on the floor, so I returned the books to their shelf, & scurried away. My husband is super disappointed. But in that instance, what would you have done?

We visited this place a few months ago, on a trip to LA. The decor is fabulous; bring a camera. There is an enormous room full of books for $1, but the rest of the store has books at different prices--good prices, but not $1.

Incredible bookstore in a shady part of town. We went at night and it was not safe. Love the selection but was disappointed because the description says all books are a dollar each and they certainly were not. Most books are retail price. Some discounted. Beautifully decorated, amazing atmosphere.

We came here to browse after visiting the Broad. They’re not exactly next to each other, but my wife and I have walked the mean streets of DTLA since 2003, so it’s no big deal. The Last Bookstore is a pretty cool place with a super hip vibe. The ground floor is pretty much regular bookstore fare. You’ve got your selection of books you’d find at any Barnes and Noble worth its salt. There’s also a rare book section off to the left as soon as you walk in, but it mostly contained books I’ve seen at the Taschen store or Hennessey + Ingalls.

But upstairs is where the magic happens. All kinds of coolness there. And all kinds of Instagram-worthy installations. A maze of books. A tunnel of books. A vault. Someone clearly had fun designing this place. There’s even a few smaller offices mixed with art studios mixed with stores up there. Definitely worth checking out even if you inevitably buy all your books on Amazon.

Wish I knew about this place last year when I spent time in LA! Don't close before I take my next cross-country road trip this fall (from South Florida).

It's my dream come true! You can't take the joyful feeling you get from reading a real book or being surrounded by them! :]
