“Where the past never dies!”
The Mariposa Museum and History Center is staffed by volunteer docents and tour guides. Pre-arranged guided tours are available for large groups. Visitors may also take a self-guided tour. The center was founded in 1957. The purpose of this non-profit corporation is the discovery, preservation and dissemination of knowledge about Mariposa County and the State of California. The center presents an authentic picture of people and life in Mariposa County. The museum grounds include the 5 stamp and 2 stamp mill, counts residence, Mariposa Gazette, Blacksmith Shop, Broom Shop, Gold Panning, and the New Old Things.
Excellent museum about Mariposa County history with well presented exhibits. Throughout are excerpts from letters which capture the flavor of the gold rush and insight into the lives of the miners'. One interesting exhibit is the re-created interior of the Gagliardo Store, a general store which operated from 1854 to1958 in Hornitos. After the store closed in the 1960s, the contents including counters and display cases along with much of the old merchandise was donated to the museum.
Outside exhibits include many mining artifacts of the gold rush and later, such as a five-stamp mill that was used for crushing gold-bearing quartz.
