“almost as awesome as the real thing...almost”

Edwin P. Hubble, originally from Marshfield, was an accomplished astronomer for whom the famous space telescope was named. Today, a one-quarter-scale replica of the Hubble telescope can be seen on the grounds of the county courthouse downtown. Elsewhere in Marshfield, the Edwin P. Hubble Elementary School also pays tribute to the town's most famous native son.Mr. Hubble himself passed away in 1953. It was in 1977 that the U.S. Congress funded the construction of the telescope, and not until 1990 was it launched into space. The telescope was at first defective, sending back out-of-focus images to Earth. In 1993 a subsequent shuttle crew was able to make corrections. On July 4th, 1994, the replica was dedicated in Marshfield.

This thing was way bigger than I thought it would be. Plus the building behind it is beautifully-designed. The grounds are very well-maintained and this is a pretty sweet photo-op.

My one regret was that I went through the town too fast. My kid was crying and I just wanted to get to our hotel for the night, so after I took a picture of the telescope we left. But, the town looks so charming, very much a Route 66 town, with the classic cafes, diners, and cute little Main Street.

A great depiction the Hubble telescope, very large. Maintained in center square. Nice place to drop in and walk around. Get off I-44 for a few.
