“Historic military installation - and conspiracy headquarters”
Camp Hero offers pristine maritime forests, freshwater wetlands, stunning ocean vistas and dramatic bluffs rising from the beach, as well as an historic military instillation. The park garnered plenty of attention in 2008 when a seemingly mutated "monster" washed up on it's beaches, a mammalian creature with a beak that could not be identified. Many point to the area's history with strange experiments as proof that the "Montauk Monster" was an escaped genetic experiment. Camp hero has achieved legendary status among conspiracy theorists who claim that the facility has an underground base used for human experiments in time travel, mind control, and even extraterrestrial contact. Some men who claim they were part of experiments referred to as the "Montauk Project", point toward the large number of mysterious man-holes sealed throughout the park, stating that they were once a way to actually reach the hidden base. Preston Nichols, an electrical engineer that once worked on the base, claims that the facility was built in order to train psychic spies out of young boys, using technology gathered from wrecked alien space craft. "We had the little grays and larger grays as well as a variety of reptilian beings," said Nichols. "The large grays didn't want anything to do with me. ... When I entered a room, they would leave." Conspiracies aren't the only thing Camp Hero State Park is known for, though. The park encompasses 415 acres of diverse landscape including heavily wooded areas, a long expanse of beachfront along the Atlantic Ocean, and an historic military installation. Specific features of Camp Hero are magnificent pristine maritime forests, freshwater wetlands, spectacular ocean vistas and dramatic bluffs rising from the beach. An extensive system of trails is available for hiking, biking and horseback riding. The park boasts some of the best surf fishing locations in the world, open 24 hours a day to fishermen with permits, and areas for picnicking. An undisturbed environment shelters bountiful wildlife and an abundance of birds. The former military base that is in the park is registered as a National Historic Site. Dogs allowed on a leash no more than six feet long.
