“The Shining & Blade Runner Location”

One of the most amazing highlights of Glacier National Park is a drive on the Going-to-the-Sun Road. This engineering marvel spans 50 miles through the park's wild interior, winding around mountainsides and treating visitors to some of the best sights in northwest Montana. This road is shown in the opening credits of the 1980 film The Shining, as Jack Torrance's Volkswagen glides past Saint Mary Lake and up the road, underneath a small tunnel and onward, presumably going to the Overlook Hotel for his job interview as a caretaker. In 1982, leftover aerial shots from this footage were used for the closing moments of the original cut of the film Blade Runner. This road is also seen briefly in the film Forrest Gump. As Forrest reminisces with Jenny, he remembers running across the U.S. and remarks, "Like that mountain lake. It was so clear, Jenny. It looks like there were two skies, one on top of the other." The shots in the background are Going-to-the-Sun Road and Saint Mary Lake.

This is the most beautiful scenic drive I have been through, it's downright jaw dropping amazing. The park has a free shuttle along this road. You can see the major highlights from this one road without leaving your car, lakes, waterfalls, Jackson glacier, the Continental Divide, mountains, valleys, and if you're lucky, animals. Most of the pull outs are on the south side of the road.

This is a must do. Just put it on your bucket list. Now. There is a reason it's been in so many movies. This drive is one of the most scenic in the US hands down. Words fail to describe it. Just go there.

This is a breathtaking drive. There is so much to see along the road, waterfalls, snow piles melting, deep valleys, huge mountains, bears. The restored trolly cars that travel up and down are also fun to see. There are many pull outs to stop and take pictures although the pictures don't do it justice.

An incredible scenic drive, but it's not without it's white knuckle moments. It may be tempting to look around at the beautiful view, but keep your eyes on the road. There are lots of long drop offs.
I highly recommend taking your time on this drive and pulling over to the scenic overlooks. It's about a 2.5 hour drive each way.

A great cycling experience going up the east side and down the west but you need to start early to avoid the traffic. Many of the rock retaining walls were being repaired during our tour but that allowed us to follow the guide vehicle down with the cars behind. Definitely a trip worth taking with stops along the way.

If you're in Glacier National Park, driving this road is something you cannot miss. It is pretty nerve wracking driving it, and I'll be honest, I was scared - but when it was all over I wanted to do it again. If you drive straight through it takes about an hour and a half, but you won't want to drive straight through. You'll want to pull over at the many pull-over spots and take photos! There's so many photo opportunities on this road it's awesome. There are hiking trails dotted along the road too so you could make an entire day out of it.
