“explore New Bedford’s rich history”
Stay with us and explore New Bedford’s rich history and culture; the City of New Bedford is truly a gem waiting to be discovered! At the height of the Whaling Industry, New Bedford became the richest city per capita in the world with its biggest industry being the export of whale oil. As the oil was most commonly used to fuel laterns, New Bedford became known as the "City that Lit the World" and inspired Herman Melville's Moby Dick. It has since been one of the largest cargo ports in the United States, an active "station" on the Underground Railroad, and flourished with its current fishing industry.
If you're a local, you know that this is an old hotel in bad repair. Some areas in the hotel have been in a state of 'renovation' for years. This is a hotel which is often used to house homeless people and other transients.
