“the largest collection of British art outside the UK”

Presented to Yale University by Paul Mellon (Yale College Class of 1929), the collection of paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, rare books, and manuscripts reflects the development of British art and life from the Elizabethan period to the present day. Works on view include masterpieces by Thomas Gainsborough, J.M.W. Turner, and John Constable, as well as artists from Europe and America who lived and worked in Britain.  The Center offers a year-round schedule of exhibitions and programs. Resources include a reference library and study room for examining works on paper. Opened to the public in 1977, the Center is the final building designed by Louis I. Kahn. Located in downtown New Haven, the Center is near many of the city’s best restaurants, theaters, and shops.

Free, beautiful, accessible--a must-see for fans of art, England, and architecture! My favorite spot on Yale's campus/in New Haven generally.

The architect, Louis Kahn, also did the Yale University Art Gallery across the street, but that was twenty years earlier at the start of his career. This museum, however, is easily a masterpiece. Gorgeous place--great light, great materials.

Art-wise, this is the biggest collection of British Art outside of the UK--thanks to Paul Mellon! My favorite bay is the Turner Bay in the far corner towards Chapel Street and High. Very special. The fourth floor always holds the permanent collection, and the second and third floors change around.

**HINT: If you go on a Saturday or Sunday at 2pm during the school year, you can catch a tour with a Yale student guide and they'll give you their own personal take--which is fun, since you can get a whole range of interests. They'll focus on 4-6 pieces that they are particularly interested in. A great way to get a more unique tour.

Also, the YCBA library is a hidden GEM. Tranquil, quiet, good looking. Their hours are mostly workday--the exception is Wednesday, when the library stays open until 8.
