New Orleans Congo Square

In Louisiana’s French and Spanish Era of the 18th Century, slaves were commonly allowed Sundays off from their work. They were allowed to gather in the “Place de Negres”, "Place Publique", later "Circus Square" or informally "Place Congo" at the back of the town where the slaves would set up a market, sing, dance and play music. Preserving the historic meeting space of slaves in the 1800s and celebrating the undeniably rich jazz history of New Orleans, Armstrong Park is a site of cultural reflection and a commitment to continuing the community spirit
