Chef Ian Schnoebelen and General Manager Laurie Casebonne opened their first restaurant, Iris, in January of 2006. Iris is a fine-dining bistro with Contemporary American fare at The Bienville House Hotel in the heart of the French Quarter. In 2007, Schnoebelen was awarded Best New Chef by Food & Wine Magazine. In January of 2013, the pair opened their second restaurant, Mariza. Mariza serves Italian-inspired cuisine in a casual comfortable environment at the Rice Mill Lofts in the Bywater, right along the edge of the Marigny and the Mississippi River.
It took a long time for Italian cuisine in New Orleans to veer from standard red sauce fare, but restaurants like Mariza, with its delicately balanced dishes and handmade pastas, make the wait seem worthwhile.
