How often do you get a chance to explore a subway tunnel? Luckily for rail fans, the New York Transit Museum makes it easy to see what lies beneath with its semi-regular tours. The best of these takes you into the beautifully preserved Old City Hall station, which opened in 1904 as part of the first subway system—it has chandeliers and tiled, vaulted ceilings that look nothing like the current, cramped subway stations. (One caveat: You have to be a museum member to take the tour.) Other upcoming tours explore the new Fulton Center hub and haunted elevated railways.
