“These towers hold a secret...”
A few seemingly innocent water towers have just been installed in New York City's Madison Square Park, but unlike the towers that grace the nearby rooftops, those curious enough to approach them will find they don't hold any water.. but instead contain portals deep into space and time.
The water towers are a creation by Brooklyn-based artist Iván Navarro, and while you can try to climb the neon ladders into infinity, you might be disappointed to find you won't get very far. The eye-popping art installations are created using lights and mirrors, something of a specialty when it comes to Navarro's work.
The piece, titled "This Land is Your Land", is meant to symbolize the idea of shelter and sustenance, a luxury that not everyone has.
"I like the idea of a reservoir of water," Navarro says. "These simple and timeless wooden structures containing water — the most primitive and elemental resource, the essence of human sustenance — reminds us of the basic condition that all humanity shares."
Those looking to experience the project for themselves can head to Madison Square Park through April 16th.
