MissionDesert conservation through preservation, education and appreciation. The Living Desert is a 1200 acre facility that specializes in the plants and animals found throughout the deserts of the world. Many exotic and endangered species can be seen in natural surroundings such as bighorn sheep, oryx, cheetahs, wolves, striped hyenas, thick-billed parrots, leopards and golden eagles. The botanical gardens represent over 1500 species, indigenous to the arid areas of North America and Africa. A state-of-the-art wildlife hospital allows visitors to interact with the staff while procedures are being performed on animals. A children's discovery center and desert play park, live animal shows, endangered species carousel, G-scale garden railroad, and many other features can be found in this unique zoo which sits in the middle of the Coachella Valley, just 15 miles east of Palm Springs. For almost four decades The Living Desert has been engaged in the important work of preserving, conserving and interpreting the desert and all its varied plant and animal life. Even as we take immense pride in our accomplishments over the last forty years, we remain as dedicated as ever to the goals that initially inspired us when we first began operations in March of 1970.
Amazing zoo and garden - one of the best around! A must see! Both educational and beautiful. I would recommend setting aside at least a whole day to see the whole place. Every time I'm in the area, I try to spend time here.
4 boys from Orange County and we had a lot of fun looking at and learning about all the different types of desert plant life. We were truly fascinated. The animals were lots of fun to see our fave was the giraffes and the sand cat also if you get a chance see the animal hospital. Right now the living desert has a Dinosaur show. And for model train lovers there is quite the outdoor train world that was fun. Very clean and friendly place. Very breathtaking scenery.
Seriously, one of the best zoo's that is affordable and well maintained. You can get up so close to the animals than other zoos. Our son (5) loves it here. Be sure to pack sun screen, water, and wear shoes. Some of the exhibits are a hike away over dirt trails. We would highly recommend this to anyone!
Such a great opportunity to visit Living Deserts Zoo & Gardens while being in Palm Springs!
There is so much to learn about the Californian flora and fauna!!
The animals are very well cared and very friendly and the plants are fantastic to see. The boards give you all the information you need and if you want to ask more then do not hesitate talking to the staff, they are all so very friendly.
Very educational and interesting visit!
